Tips for Staying Home over Spring Break

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

Staying home for spring break? No problem! Although you may be wondering what in the world you are going to do for a whole week at home there are many things you can do to spend your time.

Make your own Cinema

Watching movies is always a great way to pass time. You could binge-watch a show or even a movie series, which could take the whole day. Build your own at-home cinema if you don’t want to spend money on a movie ticket or expensive movie theater popcorn. Find a dark room in your house and set up your TV with the movie you want to watch. Get your favorite blanket and pillow and set up a comfy throne. (Fun fact: if you can’t find your film on Netflix, try . . . somewhere else). Make your favorite popcorn brand, and grab a box of candy to put next to your chair. Lastly, grab your favorite drink to sip on while you relax!

Exercise

“Regular physical activity is proven to help prevent and manage non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and several cancers'' (World Health Organization).

The brand-new YMCA is always a great place to go and spend an hour a day. Get a membership and try out the equipment to exercise during this break. Not only will exercise pass the time, but it will improve your health and happiness for the future. Exercising will help you feel better for the day and about yourself. #HitTheGym

Go Shopping

Traveling to the Iowa City or Des Moines mall and spending money is always fun. Go to your favorite store and find clothes or décor to change your style. You could even go for dorm room shopping if you plan to attend college next year. There are so many things that you can buy for the future and also spend the day outside of your house! If you aren’t trying to spend that much money, you can always check out the clearance rack and find some gems, or even hit the thrift stores and find some cute clothes for cheap!

Do an Escape Room

Escape rooms are a fun way to spend a couple of hours of your day while making your brain work. There are multiple escape rooms around Davenport, Iowa, so try to make an appointment. They make you think creatively and are very suspenseful. Grab a group of friends or even your family to test out a local escape room to see if you can unlock the case. Only 30% of people complete escape rooms (Cluetivity). Can you do it?

Get a Pet Fish

Grab your parents and go to one of the many pet stores in Davenport. You can pick out a cheap glass tank and find some pretty rocks to put in it. Not only do you get to pick out a fish, but you get to design the aesthetic of their tank however you want. There are so many houses you can choose to put in the tank for your fish to hide in. Then, you get to pick out whatever fish you want, whether a goldfish or a fish that glows in the dark! Whatever fish you choose to be your new friend then gets to be named by you. Fish can live a long time, so be prepared to clean and feed its tank daily!

Cook Something

It never hurts to whip out the dusty cookbook in your kitchen cabinet or go online. Find a recipe you have never heard of and shop for the materials. You could even vlog your experience and act like you are on your cooking show. If you aren’t going to eat all the treats you made, then maybe you could deliver them to a family member or neighbor. Don’t be afraid to try new things in the kitchen!

Make it Fun

Spring break doesn’t have to be boring. There are many things you can do to pass time within the week. Try new things and go places around the Quad Cities. Connect with your community, and enjoy your week off from school!
