The past couple years, as fall rolls around, teen girls have taken to the popular app, TikTok, to show off their dorm room decorations. Cute, and what some would say is over the top, dorm room decor has grown in popularity through these trending TikToks. These type of elaborate dorms have become especially common in southern universities like the University of Alabama. While the trend is seemingly harmless, these girls are spending upwards of $10,000 dollars on decorations and it sets an unrealistic expectation on how dorm rooms should look.
The Reality of Freshman Dorms
Having a dorm room worth thousands of dollars and decorated to the nines is not something people should expect for their freshman dorm. College is expensive and you’re probably already spending thousands on tuition, so spending more to have a extra decorated dorm is unreasonable. Most freshmen do not spend much time in their dorm in the first place, and it is more meant for studying and sleeping. You’re likely going to be living in a small one bedroom room, shared with another person; appearance is not a top priority.
Anna Harris, North Scott alumni, and freshman at the University of Northern Iowa, has a pretty typical dorm room. She and her roommate spent about $400 dollars combined on necessities and decor. They each got new bedding to fit the twin XL mattress, a futon from Walmart, Christmas tree lights strung around the room for light at night, and a television they got for free from a family member. Anna’s dorm room is similar to everyone else at her school.
Dorm Room on a Budget
Like I said, most students are paying thousands in tuition, so your dorm room decor should not be a top priority. Despite it all, if you really would like a cute room, there are ways to do it on a budget. Unlike the TikTok posts, with multiple $100 dollar paintings, TJ Maxx or Home Goods has cute cheap paintings. Amazon has almost everything and you can find all the necessities as well as any extras you want in your room, such as makeup mirrors, trendy bedding, or organizers.
Do not be influenced by these TikToks that make it seem like you need to spend excessive amounts of money on your room that you’re only going to live in for nine months. As a freshman you won’t spend much time there anyway, but if you really want it to be cute, you can do it in a budget friendly way.
