The Rewatch Podcast Dilemma: Childhood Secrets

Imagine this: The front door is pushed open and you rush in tugging your shoes off at the door. After a long day at school, you rush up the stairs to toss your backpack on your bed, mumbling promises to do your homework before dinner. But until then, with an after-school snack, you have just enough time to watch a few episodes of your favorite show. Whether Disney Channel or Nickelodeon was your choice there were plenty of fun shows to watch. In the age of streaming sites and YouTube, kids in new generations will never quite know what it's like to have to wait for a show to start but all the shows we loved in our childhood are still enjoyed by our younger siblings and kids their age. But like many things from the past coming to the light now there is always the question of how badly things have aged and if it's better to keep our favorite early 2010s shows exactly what they were. But many of the shows and their cast members now have Rewatch podcasts where the teen actors we all knew and loved talk about the show and all the behind-the-scenes secrets.

Rewatch Podcasts

While many of our parents or a certain audience of teens may enjoy The Office and its rewatch podcast Office Ladys many other shows and their podcasts have been brought under controversy. Victorious star Avan Jogia playing his character Beck Oliver later shared that he didn't remember much of filming due to excessive amounts of alcohol being given to the teens on set. Josh Peck told Drake and Josh's podcasts viewers that not only was he bullied relentlessly on set for his weight but during most of Drake and Josh he was using more than one hard drug. The sets of Drake and Josh along with Icarly, Victorious, and even Henry Danger were reported to have been filled with tension, and adults behind the shows making the young actors feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Most recently the controversy from an older show that many may or may not remember has been shared all over the internet. Devon Werkheiser, Daniel Curtis Lee and Lindsey Shaw from the 2004 show Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide told social media that they were never fairly paid for their 3-season long show and they still aren't getting their residual payments. Since then they have started their podcast Nedspod where they talk about getting older, and the unfairness on set but they even go as far as bringing up inappropriate relationships on set that came with growing up as young actors and just all-around stuff that has nothing to do with the show making fans wonder if kids as young as they were should be working actors.

Quiet On Set

With all of the secrets coming to light a lot of media outlets have made the connection of these podcast topics to the documentary released in 2024; Quiet on Set: The dark side of Tv. The documentary release brought huge amounts of controversy and shock to shows from the early 2000s. It brought more light to the already suspected issue of Dan Schneider on Nickelodeon and his early career with The Amanda show. Accusations have always been brought up about Dan and Amanda's uncomfortable relationship but also his strange actions on his shows Icarly and Victorious. Stars from Zoey 101 talk about their experience on set and the uncomfortable dialogue in their scripts. But more alarmingly it solidified the accusations against Alleged Abuser Brian Peck and his actions against Actor and Musician Drake Bell when he was only 17 years old on the set of Drake and Josh. Drake's parents became suspicious of Peck upon noticing his odd behavior towards Drake while working as a manager. Upon learning about Drake's parents' divorce, Brian Peck manipulated Drake into believing he was more important in Drake's life than his parents, causing Drake to eviscerate his relationship with his father. Drake struggles to talk about Peck eventually assaulting him many times which leaves him silent.

I told him I was terrified of him. I said "You have the power to make people stars. And I was intimidated by you." I wanted to do a good job -- Giovonnie Samuels

Brian and I became very close because he had a lot of shared interests, which, looking back, seems calculated -- Drake Bell

Now in 2025 many believe Teen shows are often too dramatized and don´t enjoy the fact that the kids are played by actors twice their age but New laws have been set to keep Young kids working in the acting world safe. It's hard to tell when celebrities may be treated badly but it also makes many wonder if these rewatch podcasts are a good thing or if the casts of these shows should leave the shows exactly what they are, in the past.
