Technology: Making Us Less Social?

Writer's picture: Carli JarrettCarli Jarrett

These days, it feels like everyone is glued to their phones. Whether it's snapping pics for Snapchat, scrolling through TikTok, or texting in group chats, it seems like technology is how we all stay connected. But is it? Sure, we can talk to anyone, anytime, anywhere–but are we actually getting closer, or are we losing something real? Instead of hanging out in person, we’re forgetting how to actually talk to each other. So, is tech making us less social, or is it just changing how we connect?

Social media is replacing face-to-face communication, leaving people more lonely and isolated. -- Kevin Kaminyar (Entrepreneur)

Technology vs. Real Conversations

A lot of studies show that too much time on social media can make us feel more lonely. Sure, we can reach out to anyone, anytime, but how often do we have meaningful conversations?  Instead, we’re stuck sending short messages or reacting to posts, and that's not the same as hanging out in person.

The Highlight Reel Trap

Social media creates this highlight reel of everyone's lives, making it easy to compare ourselves to others. Seeing only the best parts of other people's lives can make us feel like we’re not good enough. That pressure to measure up can lead us to spend even more time scrolling instead of building relationships.

Finding Balance

Of course, Technology isn't all bad. Apps and social platforms make it easy to stay in touch with family and friends, even when they live far away. But It's important to find balance. Spending too much time on our phones can make us miss out on the chance to make real memories with the people in front of us.

What Can We Do? Maybe it's time to look up from our phones more often. Plan a hangout with friends, talk face-to-face, or just enjoy the moment without needing to document it for social media. Technology is a great tool, but it can never replace real, human connection.
