Special Runners

The North Scott Community School District takes pride in supporting our Special Education program and the Special Olympics. After some time away, North Scott is bringing back Special Runners to raise funds for our Special Athletes!

Each spring, in conjunction with the State Special Olympic Summer Games, a group of students and teachers complete a run representing the distance from North Scott High School to Ames, Iowa. The purpose of this activity is for students to become active volunteers in a combined effort to raise money to support local, county and state Special Olympic participants competing in the East Area Seasonal Games, the State Special Olympic. Games, the USA Special Olympics Games and the Richard O Jacobson - Special Olympics Iowa Headquarters and Training Facility, Ames, IA.

Special Runners began in 1994, as an outgrowth of an activity in Mr. Brent Buttjer’s Fitness and Wellness class and we would like to thank him for all of his efforts towards creating such a wonderful program and opportunity for students. This event often proves to be one of the highlights of a student’s high school experience. The self-satisfaction of helping the physically and mentally challenged individuals, as well as accomplishing this grueling endurance test is overwhelming.

We are planning a send off for the Special Runners on Tuesday, May 21st, 2024.

If you would like to take part in the send off, please come to the Pit after 8:45.  We will begin at 8:50 and start the run around 9:15.

If you have any questions or would love to be involved next year feel free to reach out to Mr. Pestka, Mrs. Seals, Mrs. Gosee, Mrs. Unwin, and/ or Mrs. Skarich!
