Grad Cap Design 101

Seniors. Graduation is on its way. In less than a month, you’ll be walking across the stage at the Vibrant Arena in your red (or is it scarlet?) gowns and . . . caps. Your grad caps are the most important part of your uniform, which would make them the perfect canvas to decorate because they add a unique and personalized touch. If you choose to decorate your cap, they are due by May 21st to Mrs. Sambdman, so here is some inspiration if you need an idea for a grad cap design, as well as some tips and tricks.

Artistic

These cap ideas are for those who have some artistic talent. If you like to paint, or you’re familiar with a hot glue gun, and especially if you have some extra time on your hands, one of these ideas may be perfect for you.

High School Musical

Do you love High School Musical? If so, there are so many different HSM themed grad cap ideas out there.

Disney Adult in the Making

If you love all things Disney, you might want to consider one of these Disney grad caps. You can choose your favorite Disney movie, character, or quote to showcase your love for the Most Magical Place on Earth (there's a ton of these on Pinterest, which is why there's so many below).

ok, that's probably enough of those.

Sentimental

I’m not a huge fan of the sappy caps, but if that’s your style, you can stick on photos or choose a bittersweet quote - here’s some ideas.

BFFs

If you and your best friend have ever made matching friendship bracelets before, maybe you can take it a step further with BFF graduation caps.

Sponsors

This idea is so fun and easy. All you have to do is print out pictures of items/brands/websites that got you through high school, and stick them onto your cap. It’s funny, it’s real, it’s quick, and pretty easy.

Career Cap

So, I chose to do a career cap, because I’m REALLY excited about being a teacher, but obviously if you’re not going to be a teacher you can display whatever your future career is on your cap.

my grad cap! :)

Song Lyrics

If you have a favorite song that describes your situation perfectly, maybe consider writing some of the lyrics on your cap (many Swifties have been known for doing this).

Super Last Minute

Are you a procrastinator? It’s ok, better last minute than never, which is why there are several caps out there that are really easy to throw together at the last minute and even ones that exhibit how much of a procrastinator you really are (no judgment).

Honorable Mentions

So, these ideas are super fun but don’t really fall into any of the above categories, so I’ll just drop them here.

Tips and Tricks

Now trust me, I know what you're thinking. But I'm not artistic. But I can't do that. Wah wah wah. Listen. You do not have to do your cap perfectly like the ones above. Those are simply just inspo. But if you're like me and have ZERO artistic talent, here's a few tips:

1. Paper

Grab some scrapbook paper with a fun pattern, glitter, or just a solid color, cut it to the size of your cap, and attach it using tacky glue, tape, or with a stapler, which is what I used because I figured it would have the best hold. Make sure to cut out a hole in the middle for your tassel (I used an X-Acto knife but you could probably use a scissor blade too).

2. Stickers

Visit a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael's and find some cute stickers to add to the cap. Stickers are super fun and easy for if you're not that good at drawing or painting on designs. I recommend using letter stickers as well to add a fun message to your cap.

3. Collage

You could always print out pictures as well. Cut them out, attach them to the cap, and you have an easy peasy picture collage where no drawing or painting is necessary!

4. Borders

Adding a border around your design will make the cap really stand out. You could use ribbon, washi tape, gemstone stickers, or even fake flowers attached with hot glue.

5. Have Fun!

Decorating your grad cap should be a fun activity and not just an extra assignment. Be creative, find some fun art supplies from Hobby Lobby or Michael's, dig up some old art supplies that are probably shoved in the back of a cabinet somewhere, and make something that represents YOU. Happy decorating, and see you at graduation! :)

I just really like the examples you provided! Whether someone is decorating their cap or not, I think they will still have a good time reading this article and looking at the designs.
