Getting to Know you

Getting to know the new staff at North Scott High School

We will be profiling teachers and staff each week. We sent out a questionnaire to new staffers, and here's what we learned! Today we'll hear from Addie Craig, a new addition to the English Department, and Andrew Lehn, North Scott's new principal.

Addie Craig

What did you do before you started working at North Scott?

Before working at North Scott, I was working as a substitute teacher near Dubuque. It was challenging to end up in a different classroom (and often a different school building) each day of the week, so I'm very grateful to have more consistency in my work life.

What’s your favorite part of being here at North Scott?

My favorite part of being at North Scott is getting to know the students. Everyone has something that they're passionate and knowledgeable about, and I've learned a lot from chatting with students between classes.

Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket? How fast? Can you tell the story?

I've never gotten a speeding ticket, and I've actually never broken the speed limit. Did you know that you can type with your fingers crossed?

What’s your daily average screen time? What do you waste the most time on?

My daily average screen time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. I spend a lot of time scrolling on Pinterest, scheming about how I'd decorate my dream home.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home?

The first thing I do when I come home is cuddle with my cat, Tabby. He demands lots of attention!

What inspired your career?

When I was in high school I spent my open period being a teacher helper at my hometown's middle school. I got to know each of the students, and I always felt energized when I left their class due to their high energy and enthusiasm. It was awesome to watch their knowledge and confidence grow over the course of the school year, and I decided that I wanted to nurture this growth in other young people. Plus, I love to read, and as an English teacher I get to talk about literature all day!

Describe your favorite meal.

I love any type of pasta. My current favorite add-ins are a creamy sauce, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, and plenty of parmesan cheese.

Andrew Lehn

What did you do before you started working at North Scott?

I was the head principal at Cardinal High School for the past two years prior to joining North Scott.

What’s your favorite part of being here at North Scott?

There are a lot of things I have grown to love about North Scott High School and NS CSD, but the top of the list has to be building relationships with our amazing staff and working with our awesome students!

Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket? How fast? Can you tell the story?

Yes; one. I was 16 years old. I was running late to my friend's Super Bowl watching party, and I had a crock pot of Buffalo Chicken dip. My friend was, and still is, a die hard Buccaneers fan. His house was on the other side of the district, so about a 30 minute drive. Long story short, I was caught doing 70 mph in a 55, got to pay a $200 fine, and missed most of the 1st quarter. The dip was a big hit and the Buccaneers won. I now set my cruise for the speed limit (or a couple over).

Who’s your favorite sports/celebrity figure and why?

Patrick Mahomes - What he has done for the NFL and Chiefs kingdom is obviously awesome, but I love the way he leads. He takes ownership of his and the team's mistakes and gets others to be their best selves when in his presence.

What’s your daily average screen time? What do you waste the most time on?

Weekdays - 3 hours (Nike run, Pandora, Podcasts, Gmail) Weekends - 3-5 (Same as above, ESPN app, YouTube TV) Some minimal SnapChat and Facebook scrolling as well.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home?

If I was not on child pick up duty, I hug Violet and Brielle. Other than that, pretty boring... get the mail and pay some bills, if necessary.

What inspired your career?

After my freshman year at Central College, I coached JV/V baseball at Pekin, where I graduated from. It was a great summer of coaching student-athletes that were previously my friends. I felt like a made a major difference, not only in the W column, but in three or four players lives, on and off the field. I realized I wanted to get into education and coaching and switched my major.

What is your favorite thing to teach?

I was an art teacher for 12 years, so that gets the nod. To be more specific, I would have to say glassblowing. It's such a cool media that is very fun and intense!

Describe your favorite meal.

Ribeye steak (medium rare), sautéed vegetables (peppers, onions, green beans), and mashed potatoes.
