Coming up next Tuesday, you have the chance of saving a life. Even better, you barely have to lift a finger! On March 5th, there is going to be a blood drive here at North Scott High School in the Aux Gym, from 8:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
But many people don't know why the act of giving blood is so important. Well, to put it into perspective, about every two seconds in the United States, someone needs blood. Even one person who gives blood has the chance of helping someone in need.
In fact, one single blood donation has the ability to save three lives.
But, even though this is such an accessible way to help your neighbor, only 3% of age-eligible U.S. citizens give blood each year.
It's important to remember that blood doesn't just help others; it helps yourself as well. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology reports that those who donated blood had an 88% lower chance of a heart attack.
If you're planning on donating, it's important to be prepared. Make sure that you eat something beforehand, as it will help keep your blood sugar levels stable. This helps prevent you from feeling dizzy or lightheaded following your donation. Additionally, bring a photo ID, and if you're 16, remember to bring a parent permission slip.
Please consider giving blood at this upcoming blood drive; you're not only helping others, but you're helping your body as well. People need you, or at least your blood.
