A24: Cinema’s Cool Kid

Whenever you see that little card before the movie, you think, I don’t know what I’m in for, but I know it’s going to be good. Or it’s at least going to be different. — Renee W.

I think my biggest question when watching an A24 film has always been: Who are they, really? Sure, it’s clear they’re some kind of entertainment company. But why is it that every time I see that little A24 logo flash across the screen, the movie that follows ends up being better than half the films I’ve seen all month? So today, I’m answering that question.

Who Is A24?

A24 is an independent entertainment company based in the United States. It was founded in 2012 and is known for producing and distributing films and television shows. A24 has gained a reputation for supporting original, artistic, and unconventional storytelling. The company often works with up-and-coming filmmakers and has become well-known for its distinctive style and high-quality projects. A24 has produced and released several award-winning and critically acclaimed films, making it a prominent name in independent cinema.

So Why Is Everyone So Obsessed?

It seems as if A24 has taken over the cinema world. But why? From Hereditary and Lady Bird to Everything Everywhere All At Once, A24 has produced a steady stream of hits, each with its own unique story. These films have struck a chord with audiences because they aren’t afraid to take risks; emotionally, stylistically, and narratively. Many of A24’s successful projects break the mold of what a typical Hollywood film looks or feels like. They explore uncomfortable topics, embrace ambiguity, and allow for flawed, fully human characters to take center stage.

A huge part of what makes these films so memorable is the cinematography. A24 is known for giving filmmakers the creative freedom to craft visually stunning pieces of art. The way scenes are framed, the use of color palettes, and the attention to lighting all elevate the storytelling. Whether it's the sun-drenched dread of Midsommar, the eerie black-and-white shadows of The Lighthouse, or the chaotic, neon-soaked streets of Uncut Gems, each film has a distinct visual identity that makes it instantly recognizable. And not only does the cinematography look good, but it also tells a story. In Moonlight, for example, soft lighting and intimate camera work reflect the vulnerability of the main character. In Everything Everywhere All At Once, the camera dances through dimensions, visually echoing the film’s themes of chaos and identity. These visual choices leave a lasting impression and often invite repeated viewings, as audiences notice new details each time.

Social media has also played a huge role in their continued success. Iconic visuals from A24 films constantly circulate online, becoming memes, aesthetic inspiration, or fan edits. This virality gives older films a second life, making newer ones highly anticipated.

By giving space to daring filmmakers, embracing unconventional stories, and cultivating a unique visual identity, A24 has earned a loyal following and a lasting cultural presence. As audiences continue to crave authenticity and creativity, it’s clear that A24 isn’t just a trend; they’re shaping the future of film.
